You Can Help People Get Their GED

SER de New Mexico is a comprehensive, private nonprofit, community-based organization established to assist government agencies in providing the low-income population of New Mexico with the opportunity to obtain work, education, and training. SER's mission is to unite state agencies, community organizations, and local businesses in empowering low-income populations.

We have recognized a need for individualized one-on-one GED preparation tutoring in different communities in Albuquerque. Although T-VI offers an excellent GED program, there is a large population that needs specialized attention. T-VI offers a large classroom setting with 20 or so students to one teacher.

Their curriculum is such that they cover all the basics in a two-hour period. 65% of those tested at T-VI passed in 1999 (NM GED Testing Program Annual Data Summary). Although their program is effective for a large portion of our population, there exists a huge group that requires a different approach.

Our purpose is to offer a program that is specifically tailored to the individual needs of the participants. We would like to see one participant to one or more volunteers. Each volunteer is asked to spend one hour studying one subject with our participant. We will schedule days and times around each volunteer's availability.
