MEAT DEPARTMENT

Pollo Real:

New Mexico Organic Chickens

Pollo Real is the largest grass fed and certified organic producer of meat chickens in the U.S. We have developed an animal production model that produces healthy soils, chickens, family, consumers, community, and our earth.

Our management of moving small flocks of birds daily in planted fields of rye, chicory, millet, oats, and clovers creating the most natural and humane conditions for chickens, is the most important part of our production model. Pollo Real birds have fresh air, sunshine, and enjoy the bugs and native weeds and seeds on healthy soils.

Our small healthy flocks repay our hard work many times over by creating a powerful sustainable farm that produces no odors or waste.

Our chickens are producing healthy and balanced mineralized soils and by creating soils high in humus and organic matter, we use 80% less water than conventional farming in the Rio Grande Valley.

As our soils improve with this model, we are finding many health benefits for our grass-fed chickens, family, community and consumers. Pollo Real is a member of the New Mexico Organic Livestock Cooperative.

Look for their delicious chicken at both Co-op locations.

PRODUCE

Chile Time:
Fresh Roasted Organic Chile
by David Giedd, Produce Department Leader

It’s chile season, and once again the Co-op, in coordination with local farmers, is sponsoring a chile roast. Arnold and Christina Mazotti of M Mountain Organic Farm will roast their chile crop at the Nob Hill location on September 9; at the Valley location on September 16, and at the Downtown Grower’s Market on September 23.

All you have to do to get your organic, locally-grown chile is sign up at either the Nob Hill or Valley stores. Just ask a produce employee for assistance.

We will record your name, phone number, and the type and quantity of chile you desire. Members and customers can choose between varieties such as Big Jim (a milder chile), Barker and Sandia (both medium to hot chile), and Espanola (a hot chile).

Then, on the day of the roast, you can come to the Co-op, talk to the farmers themselves, watch them roast your chile order, and then take your chile home with you.

Arnold and Christina tell us that the persistence of the summer’s dry, hot weather has helped to produce an abundant chile crop that, like the season, will be hot.

This is an excellent opportunity for chile connoisseurs to get the freshest roasted chile possible, while also meeting the people who proudly grow this product organically for New Mexico.

The produce department team looks forward to seeing you on September 9th and 16th!

To reserve your sack, contact the produce department at 265-4631 (Nob Hill) or 242-8800 (Valley), or stop by and say hey!

BOOKS

Little-Known Little Books
by Lynn Lovejoy, Book Purchaser

I love to poke around in dusty corners of used bookstores or in boxes of books hidden under tables at yard sales. Once in awhile, a real find pops out, maybe even a subject I wouldn’t normally look for, and I’m off and learning something new and fascinating.

Here are five little books that may prove interesting to you

The first of these is Genetically Engineered Foods ($5.95), by Laura Ticciati and Robin Ticciati, Ph.D. You may have seen TV commercials which tout the benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture as the wave of the future.

But is it the future we want? The authors ask us to examine the impact of a well intentioned, yet potentially dangerous, new technology.

As Howard Gordon, former Executive Producer of The X-Files, says about this book: “Scarier than anything on the X-Files.”

Cass Ingram, D.O., is the author of Tea Tree Oil ($13.95), the natural antiseptic.

It is capable of killing any undesirable microbe on contact and is effective on conditions like acne, athlete’s foot, gum disease, toothaches, cavities, bronchitis, bad breath, dandruff, ringworm, sinusitis, vaginitis, cold sores, boils, and diaper rash.

Tea tree oil prevents wound infection of cuts, abrasions, minor burns and it doesn’t sting!

Norman Walker, D.Sc., Ph.D., has a little book called Natural Weight Control ($6.95). It is a diet like no other, based on the body’s need for vital, life-giving enzymes found only in nature’s pure foods.

You don’t have to count calories or starve or weigh and measure your food or fight cravings for sweets.

Another book to help with weight loss is Foods That Cause You to Lose Weight ($12.95), by Neal Barnard, M.D. This is about the negative calorie effect. These foods require more caloric energy to digest and assimilate than the foods contain. The more you eat, the more you lose!

Patrick Quillan, Ph.D., has a book called Healing Secrets from the Bible ($14.95). Whether you are a Christian or not, there are ancient healing secrets for everybody. He points out that we have lost sight of simple dietary ideas and are killing ourselves with technologically manufactured foodstuffs.

He shows how science is beginning to acknowledge the wisdom of biblical dietary admonitions. He includes the A, B, C’s of healing, and guides to using herbs, minerals, vitamins and nutritional supplements for specific ailments.

Poke around the bookshelves at the Co-op. You might surprise yourself by discovering a tidbit of knowledge that is life changing!
